Uniting Minnesota's performing arts

The Minnesota Theater Alliance, collectively founded by Minnesota’s theaters in 2010, is here to serve all theater and performance companies and venues of every kind, across the state. Did you know that there are over 460 theaters in Minnesota? The Alliance understands that each theater has unique hopes, needs, challenges, and successes to share. We prioritize listening to these stories and are actively working to develop and implement programs that connect our statewide theater community through audience development, shared resources, peer-based learning groups, advocacy and events.

Everyone is welcome

Every performance company and venue, of every kind: big and small; professional, community, academic, for-profit, non-profit, and unincorporated; urban, suburban and Greater Minnesota – all are welcome and invited. Most of our programs are open to all, regardless of whether you pay annual dues. Joining as a dues-paying member provides you with special member benefits, discounts, access to special events, and helps the Alliance build programs for all of us.

Our Programs

  • Audience Development: Minnesota Audience Development Exchange - cooperative database of existing arts patrons, Ticket Discount Exchange between Alliance members, and opportunities for collaborative marketing and branding Minnesota theater on a local and national scale.
  • Shared Resources: Community directories of statewide performance companies and venues (SpaceFinder), resource-share listings for props, costumes and equipment (Arts Market), Group Liability Insurance Policy, free and discounted memberships to local and national service organizations, and access to bulk discounts from participating vendors.
  • Professional Development: Peer-based working groups including Regional Networks in Greater Minnesota and Emerging Performing Arts Leaders Group, an Alliance Mentorship Exchange Program, Members-only networking events, and ongoing workshops, forums and conferences for theater-makers.
  • Communication and Advocacy: Partnership and promotional opportunities, bi-monthly newsletters and member features, peer-based intranets to support ongoing communication between working groups, and advocacy for the theater community on a local and national scale.

Your ideas shape us

We meet regularly with hundreds of theater-makers in our community to hear what you need. Every program is developed with a community-based steering committee at the lead. Click the links below to find out more about our ongoing programs:

Lean and smart

We are a small institution, with a small staff, by design; our structure is driven by your needs, not by an arbitrary ambition to grow an institution. We promise to keep our expenses minimal and to spend your membership investment responsibly and responsively.

Your participation matters

Together, we can learn so much from each other and accomplish that which none of us can do alone, but it will take all of us to succeed. We welcome your support through becoming a member, volunteering on a program or event steering committee, and board representation. If you are interested in becoming more involved in the Alliance, contact us!

Your dues matter

Membership dues are on a sliding scale based on budget size. Theaters that are members of our partner service organizations get 20% off their membership to both organizations. We depend on membership dues for only one-fifth of our budget, reaching out to other funding sources as well to bring more support to our sector collectively.
