The Minnesota Theater Alliance and the Twin Cities Sustainable Theatres Group present the first conference in the U.S. to tackle sustainable practices in our industry. Speakers, knowledge exchange, and work sessions will be organized around four tracks: People (stakeholders), Planet (environmental impact), Profit (keep the doors open) and Purpose (artistic vision and values) all feeding into the question “How can we tangibly change the way we run our theaters to ensure we stay around and have a significant positive impact on our communities?”

Our State Arts Board is back!
On July 21, 2011, the Minnesota State Arts Board reopened following the state government shutdown. The previously stated July 22 deadline for the Community Arts Schools and Conservatories grant application deadline has been extended to August 31, 2011. Grant application deadlines for fiscal year 2012 that are currently posted on the Minnesota State Arts Board Web site may be adjusted. Any revised deadlines will be posted online soon. Please note that all final reports and any required statistical reports that were due in July 2011 are still due by the dates indicated in grantee contracts. This impacts in particular those grantees with statistical reports due July 31, 2011. Those reports are still due on that date. Please see your individual contract for specific reporting requirements and deadlines.

MCA persuades Legislature to reduce arts cuts, but Governor vetoes
After a long struggle, Minnesota Citizens for the Arts managed to reduced the cuts to the arts in the General Fund from 20% to 15%, in line with the state budget deficit of 15%. The General Fund bill was passed by the legislature and sent to the Governor but he vetoed it, so they will have to re-introduce and re-pass the bill when ever they convene in a Special Session to pass the final budget agreement. Stay tuned to MCA to find out what we need to do next to suppor their efforts. Now during this lull might be a good time to say, "Hey, thanks MCA!"

Interact Center looking for tap shoes
Interact Center is looking for donations of useable tap shoes - all sizes, especially large up to size 11. We are getting revved up for our fall show, and hoping to make percussive dance a part of it! Interact’s mission is to create art that challenges perceptions of disability. We collaborate with artists with and without disabilities, from mainstream and marginalized communities, whose stories and life experiences are the grist for our original, ensemble-generated theatrical work. Please, if anyone has useable shoes that they are not using, please email Colette Illarde at
